Dr. Felipe Cubas began his journey in medicine at the young age of 10, under the guidance of his father, a pediatrician trained at University of New York hospitals in New York City. His father would take him to his medical office during the Summer and December vacations, where Dr. Cubas would observe pediatric patients. At 16, he entered the University of Cartagena’s medical school, where his uncle, an obstetrician, exposed him to emergency cesarean surgeries in the evenings. During his final year of medical school, Dr. Cubas worked as a surgical assistant, on call for all emergency surgeries at the hospital.
Following his father’s advice, Dr. Cubas moved to the United States after meeting all the requirements of the Colombian Department of Health. Just two months after his arrival, he passed the American medical exam, which led to the granting of a Resident’s visa. Dr. Cubas then trained in Chicago at Loyola University-affiliated hospitals, St. Francis in Internal Medicine, Northwestern University-affiliated St. Joseph in General Surgery, and Southern Illinois St. Mary’s in Emergency Medicine. In 1990, he became Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. His career includes roles as the Medical Director of Emergency Medical Services for the city of St. Louis, Missouri, and over ten years working at Jackson Memorial Trauma Center in Miami and Memorial Regional Hospital Trauma Center in Hollywood.
In 1999, Dr. Cubas opened the first Emergency Center outside a hospital in the United States, which would later set the standard for what we now know as Urgent Care Centers, widely available today. Recently, he spent six years working for AssociatesMD as an internal medicine physician. Dr. Cubas is now opening a new office, offering primary care and aesthetic services, adapting to the evolving needs of the community. His contributions to emergency medicine and patient care have had a lasting impact, solidifying his reputation as a dedicated and innovative physician.
